Day 22: Our First Challenge Deadline Passed With Zero Submissions

PratyeAugust 14, 2026

Two days ago — August 12 — the first of our three live challenges hit its deadline. Zero submissions. Tomorrow, August 15, the other two hit the same deadline, and as of right now they're sitting at zero too. This is the first time a challenge on BrainSumo has actually run its full course, so it felt more honest to write about that than to skip a week.

What actually happens when nobody submits

The "Quick Win Challenge" — pitch a 30-day growth idea for an Indian D2C snack brand, $50 prize — closed with a winner-selection status of pending: no submissions means no one to judge, so no winner gets picked. All three of our live challenges are funded by us, not by a paying company, so there's no client sitting on the other end wondering what happened to their brief. The prize money we set aside for it doesn't get spent; it stays with us instead of going to a solver. That's a fine outcome for our bank balance and a bad outcome for the actual goal, which is proving that real people will show up and submit real ideas.

Where the numbers actually stand

  • 15 registered users on the platform — unchanged from our last update.
  • 3 live challenges, all still founder-funded — still zero posted by a paying company.
  • 0 submissions across all three, and 0 client-funded challenges to date.

We don't have a fresh outreach-pipeline count to report this time — last update it was 44 companies contacted, and we're not going to reuse that number here dressed up as new. The story this week is on the challenge side, not the outreach side.

What we think this actually means

Zero submissions across three challenges, several weeks, is itself a data point, and we'd rather name it than spin it. The most likely explanation isn't that the problems are boring — a snack-brand growth pitch, an app name and tagline, a cafe referral idea are all things we'd expect a student or early-career marketer to enjoy thinking through in one sitting. It's more likely a distribution problem: 15 registered users is a small enough pool that "zero out of 15 happened to submit" isn't a strong signal about the challenges themselves, it's a signal that we haven't gotten these specific challenges in front of enough of the right people yet. That's on us, not on the brief format.

What's still open

The other two challenges — naming a budget grocery delivery app ($55) and a student referral idea for a college-town cafe ($55) — close tomorrow, August 15, at 18:00 UTC, still at zero submissions each. If you want to see what a completely uncontested BrainSumo challenge looks like before that changes, the two of them are here.

If you're a Head of Growth or CMO reading this and wondering whether a real brief from your company would get a different result than our own self-funded ones — that's the actual open question we're trying to answer, and we don't know the answer yet either.
