Day 40: The Backend Was Down for 10 Days — Here's the Honest State Now That It's Back

PratyeSeptember 1, 2026

This is the first update in two weeks, and the gap wasn't a deliberate skip. For about 10 days — roughly August 20 through August 30 — api.brainsumo.in was unreachable. No account creation, no browsing challenges, no submissions could go in even if someone tried. We kept posting build-in-public content on Instagram through that stretch because that channel doesn't depend on the backend, but we also said, honestly, that there was no live number to report. Now the backend is back, verified this session with a working admin login and live analytics pulled fresh — so this is the first update since the outage where every number below is something we actually just checked, not something carried forward from memory.

What broke

We're not going to dress this up with technical detail that doesn't matter to the person reading this as a marketing lead sizing up whether to trust the platform with a brief. The plain fact: for about a week and a half, the site was simply not usable. That's the whole story. No partial uptime, no workaround that kept things limping along. If you tried to visit brainsumo.in during that window, it didn't load.

What's still true

The outage didn't change the underlying numbers — it just paused everything while they already stood where they stood. As covered in our last two updates, all three challenges BrainSumo has ever run are closed:

  • Quick Win Challenge (a 30-day growth idea for an Indian D2C snack brand) — $50 prize, closed August 12. Zero submissions.
  • Name It & Brand It (name and tagline for a budget grocery delivery app) — $55 prize, closed August 15. Zero submissions.
  • Campus Comeback (a referral idea for a college-town cafe) — $55 prize, closed August 15. Zero submissions.

That's still $160 in combined, already-funded prize money across three challenges, and zero submissions on any of them — confirmed again this session via a fresh admin pull, not an assumption carried over from before the outage. We still read this as a distribution problem, not a product or quality-bar problem, for the same reason we gave in our last full post-mortem: the briefs are the kind of one-sitting problem we'd expect a student or early-career marketer to enjoy, and each paid real money. Not enough of the right people have seen these specific briefs exist yet.

What actually moved anyway

The one number that genuinely changed while the site was down is the outreach pipeline — because outreach doesn't depend on the website being up, and real research and real emails kept going out. As of this session:

  • 66 companies are now in our outreach pipeline, up from the 44 total we reported back on Day 16 (August 8).
  • 44 of those 66 have had a real first-touch outreach email sent directly — not just researched and added to a list, actually contacted.
  • 19 are still pending a first touch, and 3 have been marked rejected (not a fit, or declined).

We're reporting this the same way we report everything else here: honestly, and without pretending it's a bigger deal than it is. A growing outreach pipeline with zero client-funded challenges to show for it yet is still zero client-funded challenges. But it's real, ongoing work, and it's the reason we don't think the outage cost us as much momentum as ten dark days might suggest — the part of the business that doesn't need the website up kept running the whole time.

What's next

No new challenge is live right now — all three are closed, and posting the next one is the next real milestone we're working toward, whether that's another self-funded challenge to keep proving out the mechanic, or the first one funded by an actual company from the pipeline above. We'll report on whichever happens first, the same way we've reported every zero along the way.

If you're evaluating BrainSumo right now

If you're a Head of Growth, CMO, or marketing lead sizing up whether to fund a challenge here, the honest state is: the platform works again, the mechanic is proven out on paper (real prize money, real deadlines, written-pitch submissions judged against a rubric you set), but we don't yet have a completed challenge with a real winner to point to. The three closed challenges are still viewable here if you want to see exactly what a brief and a submission ask look like. If you'd rather talk through scoping your own problem into that shape, reach out — no cost to look, and we'll tell you honestly if we don't think it's a fit yet.
